Sai Tai Mai

  • Share:
Sai Tai Mai, or “New Southern Line,” serves primarily as the bus terminal in the northwest district of the city. If you’re heading on a long journey to Phuket or Chiang Mai, however, Sai Tai Mai is a pretty cool place to hang out for an hour or two, especially at night.

Klongthom Sai Tai Mai Night Market

The night market at Sai Tai Mai is an exciting place to shop if you’re looking for souvenirs, low-priced clothing, handmade jewelry and traditional Thai knick knacks. While there are many different markets in Thailand, Sai Tai Mai is unique in that it is set away from the tourist areas and a bit smaller than the crowded markets you will visit in the middle of the city. You won’t find many, if any, foreigners browsing at Sai Tai Mai. Therefore, you will have plenty of opportunities to practice your Thai speaking skills!

HOURS: The market opens near sunset. Closing times vary according to vendors, but most shop owners close between 11 p.m. and midnight.

SC Plaza

If you’ go to Sai Tai Mai to buy a bus ticket, you can do that inside SC Plaza on the third floor. Just look for your destination on the signs above the service counters, and pay for your ticket at the window.

If you have some time to spare before your bus leaves, SC Plaza is a small but cool little shopping center also. If you arrive before the night market starts buzzing, you can whittle away some time at the local Thai food and souvenir shops inside SC Plaza. You can also find well-known fast food chains like Dairy Queen and Dunkin Donuts if you are craving a sweet treat from home.

HOURS: 5 a.m.-10 p.m., Monday-Sunday

How to Get There

Sai Tai Mai is located in the Taling Chan District on Borommaratchonnani Road. Any taxi driver in the city will know the area well. You can simply tell your driver that you want to go to “Sai Tai Mai.”

You can also take the Skytrain to Bang Wa BTS Station. From there, you can get a taxi - or a mototaxi if you’re feeling daring - and head to Sai Tai Mai from there. From the BTS, Sai Tai Mai is about a 10- or 15-minute taxi ride.
