Any tourist coming to Thailand will be familiar with the term ‘ladyboy’. They have been called Thailand’s third sex, as it does seem that there is an extraordinary number of them here. Tourists will definitely come into contact with them, but whether they will realise it or not is another matter.

Ladyboys are employed in many customer service positions, as they are usually very polite and extremely well groomed, not to mention extremely pretty. Katoeys often work in pharmacies, behind shop counters, as receptionists and in restaurants. And of course, many also exploit their unusual attributes by becoming prostitutes.

It is often said that Ladyboys are comfortable having sex with either males or females. They are well known for taking exceptionally good care of themselves, and for being fairly opinionated. So if you are looking for a ‘lady of the night’ with something extra to offer, then maybe a Katoey would be a good choice?

Often Ladyboys are so beautiful, it is extremely difficult to tell them apart from a ‘real’ woman. But for those who wish to look carefully, there are clues. Thai men are generally very slim and slight and are, to many, very feminine. They do not have the body hair of many other races, which are generally considered to be more masculine.

Surgeons at top hospitals in Bangkok are famous throughout the planet for conducting sex change operations, or relatively simple cosmetic surgery. They can create breasts and hormone regimes keep the male hormone testosterone at bay, while their bodies are flooded with the female hormones estrogen and progesterone.

Not every Ladyboy you meet will be a sex change candidate. Many are unable to afford these operations. With breast implants costing around fifteen hundred euros, and a full sex change four times that amount, most ladyboys you are likely to meet could be classified as ‘transvestites’ (men dressed as women), rather than ‘trans-sexuals’ (those with a complete sex organ transformation). Many opt for having the breasts enlarged first, following many years later with the full sex change. Don’t be surprised, then, if the Ladyboy you take home has luscious full breasts and the male tackle as well. Many a sex tourist has been taken in by the stunning good looks of a Katoey.

So how can you distinguish between a natural born woman and a ladyboy? Two of the biggest clues are shoulders and feet. And if that person blatantly giving you the eye across pub is a Katoey, he/she will be far more aggressive and up-front about ‘coming on’ to you than a natural born Thai woman. Ladyboys have a tendency to become fairly violent or pushy, which is totally against the nature of most Thai women.

Another clue is that generally they do not mix with the regular bar girls. There are often bars which only have ladyboys, with no natural born women around. Also, many tend to work for themselves, plying their trade on street corners, trying to save enough money to pay for their surgery. Having mostly been raised as boys, they are often way more forward in approaching clients than women would be.

Another physical clue is their voice, if it is fairly deep, then perhaps the hormone therapy has not taken effect yet. Asian women are usually flat chested, so be suspicious of anyone sporting large breasts. Probably the biggest ‘give away’ is the shoulders. Most men have shoulders wider than their hips. Women are more balanced.

Obviously being a Thai Ladyboy is not the worst fate that could be dealt a person. Katoeys reputedly earn much more money than the average natural born Thai female bar girl, and maybe having been men they have an advantage over natural born women?
