Bangkok's Top Ten Luxury Hotels

Making a top ten list of Bangkok hotels is difficult as there are many fine hotels in the city, with at least 35 being categorized as five star accommodations.

As such, they are recognized as providing guests with exceptional and excellent accommodations, customer service, international dining, bar and grill, and specialized facilities such as spas, fitness centers and swimming pools.

They also have top of the line meeting and convention facilities along with boutique shopping opportunities. Hotels which are ranked in the top ten may be said to overwhelm guests with a sense of opulence or to submerge guests in it.

It should be recognized that all of these hotels maintain luxurious guest rooms and public areas, have small staff to guest ratios and provide guests with excellent service. The descriptions are meant to highlight some factors which set the various hotels apart from one another.

1. The Oriental Bangkok

   More correctly called the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, is located at 48 Soi Burapa Charoenkrung Road on the Chao Phraya River in the Riverside district.
   
   It has been open for service for 130 years and maintains the style of luxury, opulence and attentive service typical of high class 19th century hotels. It is convenient to most of Bangkok's historical and cultural treasures and offers its guests panoramic views of Bangkok and the Chao Phraya River.
   
   Additional, more modern wings have been added to the hotel since the late 1950's. The Oriental has been criticized by some as relying too much on the celebrity status of famous guests such as Joseph Conrad, W. Somerset Maugham, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor and Noel Coward to maintain its reputation.

2. The Peninsula Bangkok

   It is also located on the Chao Phraya River – on the west, less developed side - adjacent to the Saphan Tasksin station of the Bangkok Sky Train.
   
   Unlike the Oriental, it is relatively new, having opened in the last 15 years, and has won more awards for excellence in the short time it has been open than have any of its competitors as it has managed to incorporate technology tastefully and effectively to enhance the guest experience, while simultaneously providing guests with handcrafted luxury.
   
   The Peninsula is a high rise, its rooms large and among its many strengths is its "W" design, which ensures that all its rooms have a view of the Chao Phraya River. Another strength is its fitness center, which is considered to far exceed reasonable expectations.

3. The Sukhothai Bangkok

   The Sukhothai is located in the Sathorn business district, is designed to resemble a traditional Thai palace. It consists of 210 single and two story accommodations complete with hand crafted interiors and antique furnishings.
   
   They occupy a six acre complex and are surrounded with courtyards, lotus ponds and tropical gardens. Its main restaurant, The Celadon, might serve the best Thai food of any hotel in Bangkok, but a full international cuisine is available.
   
   Its fitness and spa are considered outstanding, and are completed by the garden ambience. The hotel maintains its own airport staff to assist arriving guests – including immigration processing – and a fleet of 19 luxury Mercedes limousines to transport guests to and from the hotel.

4. The Shangri-La

   Like the Oriental, is an older hotel located on the Chao Phraya River, and it is said that it competes with the Oriental in terms of offering its guest opulence and attentive service.
   
   It has 799 rooms emphasizing traditional Thai decors and sprawls over a large area. It has attracted a large number of boutique shops and has a huge fitness-swimming complex, and spa which attracts many visitors. Everything here is larger than life.

5. The Four Seasons

   Located on Ratchadamri Road, has 340 guest rooms and is situated in the middle of the corporate, diplomatic and shopping center of Bangkok. It disdains the modern high rise approach, rising only to heights of four and five stories.
   
   It emphasizes a quiet but luxurious Mediterranean appearance, using marble and white paint and other soft colors in a very tasteful, effective manner. A 25 meter outdoor swimming pool is available for guests.

6. The Conrad

   The Conrad is located on Wireless Road not too far from the Four Seasons. It is very much geared toward the business traveler and attempts to provide all the technology and services the business traveler requires.
   
   It does have a reputation of being more "laid back". However, than most Conrad hotels and is the scene of a lively nightlife. A particular strength of the Conrad is considered to be the fitness-swimming complex.

7. The Plaza Atheene

   A high rise, is located on Wireless Road near Lumpini Park. The outer appearance of the hotel is rather ordinary but the inside, a classical Western ambience, is designed to impress. Marble and largeness are emphasized.
   
   Near to The Conrad and The Four Seasons, it is also conveniently near business and shopping destinations. Like the Conrad, perhaps even more so, it is designed for the no-nonsense business person who values speed and efficiency.

8. The Intercontinental Bangkok

   The Intercontinental Bangkok is a tall, skyscraper type structure located on Ploenchit Road (Sukhumvit Road) just east of the Erawan shopping area and within walking distance of other top ten hotels. It offers 381 luxury guest rooms and contains several high class shopping boutiques and restaurants.
   
   Guests many enjoy themselves on the roof top swimming pool, the hotel spa, or the Infinity Fitness Center, which are located on the upper floors of the hotel. The hotel maintains meeting and convention facilities. A Bangkok mass transit station is located just outside the hotel.

9. The Dusit Thani

   The Dusit Thani Bangkok is one of Bangkok's older, more elegant hotels. It is conveniently located in the heart of Bangkok's business district, at the corner of Silom Road and Rama IV Roads. Across from the Dusit Thani is Lumpini Park, Bangkok's premier green space and recreation area. The hotel maintains 513 guest rooms, a meeting and convention center, eight restaurants and bars, an outdoor swimming pool and the award winning spa, "Devarana"

10. The Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit

    The Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit is located at 250 Sukhumvit Road, at the intersection with Wireless (Wittayu) Road. It maintains 420 guest rooms along with 36 Grande Suites. It prides itself on its award winning Grand Spa, a luxurious garden and an outdoor swimming pool. Six restaurants and bars are maintained. The hotel has several conference and meeting rooms. The Sheraton was voted the "Best Business Hotel in Thailand, 2004" by Business Asia and "World Best 500 Hotels" by Travel and Leisure.

Notes on pricing: prices generally begin in the 3,500 to 5,000 baht a night range, although they can be higher. Guests should investigate prices on the internet and attempt to negotiate a discounted price as discounts are usually available.
